About Kate

Kate Borger
A native New Yorker who cut her teeth at NYU's college radio station, then community radio at Pacifica's WBAI and public radio at WNYC. Now a Pittsburgher for over two decades, Kate brings more than 25 years of radio host and DJ experience to WZUM.
Before joining WZUM, Kate was the founder and host of The Roots and Rhythm Mix on WYEP for 11 years, making her a familiar voice to Pittsburgh music audiences.
Kate believes that “music from anywhere in the world and from any genre can be a happy, joyous and uplifting experience.” That philosophy drives every episode of Rhythm-a-ning.
The Show
Rhythm-a-ning
Named after the Thelonious Monk composition, Rhythm-a-ning blends jazz with world music, bossa nova, blues, and sounds from across the globe. Each episode is built around a theme — celebrating an artist's birthday, exploring a season, honoring women in jazz, or simply playing music Kate loves.
The show airs Fridays at 10 AM and Saturdays at 11 AM on WZUM, the Pittsburgh Jazz Channel.

Grammy-winning vocalist whose timeless phrasing and purity of tone at 24 years old channels the great tradition while sounding like no one but herself. The real thing.
Verve Records→“Rebirth” — Phoenix

Concord Records→“Tributary” — View With a Room
Guitarist with preternatural fluency across jazz, Americana, and classical. View With a Room alongside Bill Frisell is two generations of guitar genius in conversation.
Blue Note Records→“Joyful Noise” — We Insist 2025
Drummer, producer, and educator who reimagined Max Roach’s civil rights masterpiece for a new era. Three-time Grammy winner. An institution unto herself.
Candid Records→“I Didn't Know What Time it Was” — WomanChild
MacArthur “Genius” Fellow whose voice contains multitudes — vaudeville, blues, French chanson, and devastating emotional depth. Every album redefines what a vocalist can do.
Nonesuch Records→“Dreamer” — Dreamer
Brazilian pianist and vocalist who is the living bridge between jazz and bossa nova. Her touch on the piano is unmistakable — warm, sophisticated, and deeply rooted in São Paulo and New York alike.
Concord Records→“Late Late Show” — Sunday Jam
Pittsburgh’s own. Etta Cox is the city’s reigning jazz vocal icon, and Al Dowe is a cornerstone of the local scene. Sunday Jam is homegrown jazz at its most authentic.
